D.I.Y. steht schlicht für "do it yourself". Wer
jetzt an Baumärkte und Heimwerkersendungen denkt, liegt historisch
gesehen nicht völlig daneben... Interessanter ist allerdings
die politische Variante, die anarchistische Elemente mit dem alltäglichen
Leben verknüpft. Die klassische DIY-Attitüde des frühen Punkrocks
z. B. wurde unter anderem durch Bands wie Crass in den frühen
80er mitgeprägt. Instrumenteverlosen bei Bands, individuell
modifizierte Klamotten, selbst kopierte Zines und interessante
Selbstversuche bei der äusserlichen Darstellung waren Haltung
und Notwendigkeit; das komplette Outfit gab's noch nicht zu kaufen.
Da auch hier die Wirtschaft das Potential Subkultur schnell vermarktete,
spaltete sich die Szene. Während viele Bands bei Major Labels
unterkamen, gründeten sich auf der anderen Seite zahlreiche
unabhängige Labels wie z.B. Alternative Tentacles. DIY wurde
zur Kampfansage gegen Kommerzialisierung.

DIY stands for "do it yourself", as opposed to paying
a professional to do it for you. DIY once just referred to hardware
stores in Britain that supplied amateur repair people with tools.
Today the term can indicate "doing" anything from healthcare
to interior design, from publication to electronics. The DIY ethic
is loosely tied to punk and various anticonsumerist movements,
in as much as it amounts to a rejection of the idea that one must
always purchase the things that one wants or needs from others.
DIY questions the uniqueness of the expert's expertise, and promotes
the ability of the ordinary person to learn to do more than he
or she thought was possible.
